“Wow. You really are something.” Alexandria glared at me, looked back down at the sketchbook I’d tossed in front of her, then sneered at Susan by my side. “Kiss your badge goodbye, honey. It’ll be too bad that you’re losing the shine, though. It’s the only piece of jewelry that looks good on a mannish frame like yours.”

“Come on. There’s no reason to—”

Susan cast a glare of her own at Leo, cutting him off, before addressing Alexandria, her tone professional and cold. “Insults aren’t going to help you, Ms. Bell. Some explanations are in order.”

“I’ll say.” Alexandria repositioned the wooden armchair, fully at ease. “You practically dragged me from my cabin and—”

“No one dragged you, Ms. Bell.”

Alexandria cocked an eyebrow. “You practically dragged me from my cabin, and then proceed to allow it to be broken into by these two.” She looked at me again. “And probably that mutt of yours. Not only will I have the cop’s badge, but I’ll sue you for every stray hair and stain on my property”—without a break she returned to Susan—“and to top it off, you’re interrogating me without a warrant, right next to, judging from the bloodstains, where that boy was killed.”

That had thrown me off as well when Leo and I had walked back into the main lodge, only to have Lisa tell us Susan had taken Alexandria to the library game room. I’d barely glanced to where Luca’s body had been before I’d shown Susan what Leo and I had found.

“Don’t forget to add this to your bevy of complaints.” Susan picked up the key letter opener in an evidence bag she’d placed on a nearby table. Slight mocking entered Susan’s voice when Alexandria merely rolled her eyes. “You’re not even going to pretend to be disturbed by the sight of the murder weapon you used?”

“I’m hardly a fainting flower.” Alexandria smiled. “So that’s it, then, you’re truly accusing me of murder?” She gestured toward the sketchpad. “Because of this? How in the world is an old drawing of me and an ex-boyfriend tied to some poor waiter or custodian, whatever he was, getting himself killed?”

I flinched, despite myself.

Alexandria noticed but didn’t have time to say anything before Susan responded.

“Acting so nonchalant around murder doesn’t exactly put any cards in your favor.”

“Like I said, I’m not a fainting flower.” Alexandria barely spared Susan a glance before studying me, her blue gaze dipping down to Watson, who hadn’t left my side since finding the sketchbook. After a second, she blinked, then her gaze traveled up and down my body before she met my eyes. “I’m a little embarrassed that I’ve been so slow to catch on. In my defense, you are about as far from his type as I could imagine.”

Leo stiffened and stepped closer.

Alexandria didn’t miss a beat, though she didn’t spare Leo a glance, a wicked smile growing as she addressed me. “But apparently you do have a type. Tall, dark, and handsome. Gotta say, I’m impressed, if not completely baffled.
